Crack Cocaine of the ’90s and the Black Community Today

The epidemic that had the largest impact on the Black community is the crack cocaine epidemic. I do not believe many understand how much devastation it caused us.

Having worked in communities of color for many years, I realized that many people are still suffering from the crack cocaine epidemic. Though the epidemic is over, the remnants are still present: children who lost parents to addiction, overdose, incarceration, or turf-war gun violence. These children are now adults who live with abandonment, neglect wounds, and childhood trauma.

For this reason, the work of The Black Girl Healing Project is targeted in the cities that were impacted the most by the crack cocaine epidemic.

As the Black community continues to progress, we must make certain we leave no one behind.

You can do your part to contribute to healing our community.

1.    Purchase The Black Family’s Guide to Healing Emotional Wounds and read with family, as it discusses the wounds of addiction and childhood neglect. Proceeds go toward funding our initiatives.

2.    Volunteer to serve and support those who are still dealing with the impacts.

3.    Remain educated, because it is easy to distance ourselves and judge those who live differently from us. When we educate ourselves, we gain empathy. Action plus empathy is where meaningful change begins.
